"The world says: "You have needs -- satisfy them. You have as much right as the rich and the mighty. Don't hesitate to satisfy your needs; indeed, expand your needs and demand more." This is the worldly doctrine of today. And they believe that this is freedom. The result for the rich is isolation and suicide, for the poor, envy and murder." ~ Fydor Dostoyevsky
Any time we come across the basic teaching 'I have no needs' an alert ego in the group inevitably tosses in the familiar red herring 'Hmm, no need for food and water?' Yes, as long as I am convinced of my false identity as a body I will have 'need' of these. That is not what Dostoyevsky is talking about here, I believe. It is in the 'expand your needs and demand more' that we find the root of our restless searching. Nothing outside myself can bring me anything I truly need. The fruitless search finds its motivation in not accepting this truth.
